Bally’s Magic
Line Bingo Pinballs first appeared in 1954 with Variety and ended in 1978
with Galaxy
Quite a span of years
and quite a span of bingos, including horizontal movements on the 2-Card
Miss America Bingos.
Here is a great image from one of the
patents released in April of 1960`

The game-name of the
first pin in this series was really apropos`…Variety
And after involving
the player at this level, really nothing less would be accepted`
For a great many,
that was the true draw of the machines`…being physically and
mentally involved`
These games decidedly set the tone,
expectation, and demand for more-and-more complex games
going-forward`…In
affect, heralding the first “Thinking Man’s Pinball”
The first four games all offered vertical
movement of the numbers`…one earned in coin-play`
Variety allowed you to adjust the first 3
lines up-and-down and Big Time all 5 lines`
Gay Time and Gayety reverted to only 3
adjustable lines, since they also offered the Magic Pockets feature.

~ Just being able to move three of
the columns is very Powerful ~

…my Big Time uses the same basic movement`
“ You don’t know how many times I hit the
11,7,5 and 11,7,5,23 ”
“5-in-Line is very doable on these games and to
this day, Big Time is my favorite Bingo Pinball”

In
1957 Bally brought this feature back out for the 2-Card Miss America games
and the movement was changed to the horizontal direction, where you were
allowed to move numbers back-n-forth between the two cards that were
continently stationed side-by-side,
(all
basically a Don Hooker idea, that is still used today even on the newer
Belgium machines)
Finally, Galaxy came out in 1978 and Bally moved back to the vertical
movement, where the player is allowed to move two rows at a time on that
very unique 4x6 row bingo. The movement was restricted to up-or-down one
position, but if enabled it even allowed movement after the 5th
ball which is pretty cool – Galaxy is a great bingo if you’re
deciding what pins you would like.
