…ok, I am going to have to spend a bit of time editing this page to make it look pretty, so I will come back`

Looks like I stole this post right off of J.F’s website or off the MAACA Forum`

I really like this post and as I reformat it, I will add a bunch of extra notes to tie this detail

to “how do the Bingos operate” – JF covers some great modules and detail here`

This is a wonderful start to build upon`

Working Bally Show Time

Postby Pindude152 » Sat Dec 16, 2017 10:42 am

Here's something I haven't done in a long time... document a bingo repair journey on here.
The project is a 1957 Bally Show Time bingo machine.

20171212_182042.jpg

Still rockin' fishnets at 60! Don't dream it, be it.

The sister machine to Cypress Gardens, It has "Magic Corners", that is, Numbers that move when you have the feature lit.
With only 450 units produced, it's a rare bingo machine to come across.
This is my first moving numbers project.

First and foremost, a heartfelt THANK YOU to Xylog for offering me the machine.

This machine has been around on this forum before it ended up in my hands. Since this Show-Time has a history. I thought it would be fair to document the repairs here.

Anyone recognize this game?

I started where Rob Xylog left off. I replaced the Mixer motor and put the mixer cams in order. With the mixer apart, I also changed a couple cam levers.

Mixer!

I actually had to refer to one of my old posts for the order of the mixer cams :FP: I read somewhere that posting stuff online is a good way to keep useful information. I guess it works 8-)

Then I replaced the Red button relay coil, the anti-cheat relay coil, the search relay #1 coil, the #3 search relay cage.
Fortunately I have spare parts on hand :-)

20171121_181236.jpg

Bin of spare oparts

Next was the wiring. At the top of the door and on the trip bank, there were a bunch of wires with the insulation worn out or just crumbling to bits. So I spliced color matched wires and/or used shrink tubing. shrink tubing. Clean looking :-)

Thanks, Merci.
Pour réparer une bingo, il faut absolument le manuel et les schémas. Ils sont disponible en ligne gratuitement.
To repair a bingo machine, you absolutely need the manual and schematics. They are available online for free.

Second part

First, more thanks.
Thank you to LittleBrutus, who changed all the fuse clips and part of the 120V. wiring, a long time before I got the machine. It saved me a ton of time... and fuse clips
:) Nicely done Sir!

20171212_183030.jpg

Fuse clips

Thanks also to Rob ShootAgain for giving me a hand reassembling the game at my place, the head on Show-Time is horrendously heavy.

Back to the repairs... The moving numbers unit

When I got the machine, it was full of hacks. The gear on the motor's output shaft that drives the whole mechanism was some sort of braised weld hack, A large spring was in the wrong place, parts were missing. The thing was a bit of a mess.

20171121_181603.jpg

Part of a cam lock for a washer

Since Show-Time is a rare game, there are very few pictures of the unit online. No detailed pictures and I did not find a diagram for the unit. Furthermore, It seems Bally did changes between models, I have a Cypress Gardens parts machine with a complete moving numbers unit, but it's different from the one in Show-Time, even if they are sister machines and the moving numbers feature is exactly the same. Finally I figured out something that mechanically makes sense, and more importantly it works, using leather clutch parts like in a bingo control unit.

Ok sure, your request is a bit wide ranging so here is a bit of info on the moving numbers unit. I will indulge the few readers of this thread.

The whole unit is driven by a single motor at the top of the unit. The output shaft on the drive motor is keyed for a leather clutch system. The gear (not keyed, so free moving) on the output shaft is sandwiched between the leather clutch discs and key washers, the whole thing is pressed together by the large compression spring that causes enough drag to spin the gear. The series of idler gears transmits to the movement to the whole unit. The A, B, C, D and E gears drive the magic corners and magic line also have a free gear sandwiched between leather clutched and Keyed washers that drives a shaft that rotated the number carousels.

Here is a closeup of the motor and drive gear

Motor and drive gear

20171218_165258.jpg

Mechanism 1

When you have the feature, pressing the A, B, C, D or E energises a index coil. There is a switch on the armature plate that closes the circuit to the drive motor when the coil is energised. The motor starts and is energised as long as the armature hasn't indexed in one of the notches.

When the motor runs, all the gears on the unit rotate including the A, B, C, D and E gears, but only the non indexed cams spin the numbers carousels.

20171218_165211.jpg

The cams are indexed for the numbers to line up with the lit holes.

Here is a close up the a rotating number carrousel. The screw in the middle can be undone to remove the whole thing and access the lamps behind. The shaft is indexed with a small pin. When reassembling the unit, you have to make sure you put the carousel in the right position, otherwise, the wrong number will light up.

As for the determination of the winning combinations, the search sequence only "looks" for the 3, 4, and 5 lit sequences. Here is how its expressed in the manual

Thank you! I was wondering about those E discs and how they fit in. The shot with the backglass off displays that perfectly.
Crazy that it is held by a compression string. Does this mean serious adjustment problems 60+ years down the line for the motor transfer?

No, it's fairly low stress. The gears aren't worn out. The carousels and index cams are on a keyed shaft with keyed washers. The leather clutch system is to transmit movement and avoid breakage if something should jam. The only adjustment problems that can happen are at reassembly if certain gears for the "E" line aren't proerly lined up.

A bit of troubleshooting...

But first, a bit of recap, the mixer motor was changed, the mixer cams were sorted out, the dodgy wiring was fixed, the 120V section and fuse clips are sound... time to put the juice on the machine.

I plug the machine in, flick on the switch. tha game is all lit up. So far, so good.
I coin up the machine: The balls drop to the trough. A ball is served up to the shooter lane... All is good.
Then I coin up the game a second time: The game does it's spin cycle. I get the magic square feature and the game locks up. The magic square feature unit step up coil is locked up energised. That unmistakable buzzing sound. I turn the game off before the coil fries.

First thing I did was inspect the magic square feature unit disc for obvious shorts, solder bombs, carbon bridges or anything else weird. The unit's disc checks out OK.

Then I consult the schematics

magic square feat su coil.jpeg

Show Time Bingo Schematics detail

The Magic square step up coil circuit goes through the Selection feature unit disc...

I have a look at the diagram of the disc in the manual

selection feature disc.jpeg

From the show time manual

I compare the wiper position on the selection feature unit in the game with the diagram in the manual. Turns out the wiper was 180 degrees off. I reposition the wiper and all is good.

selection feature disc.jpg

Selection unit wiper in correct position

Now it's time to play the heck out of it to look for bugs, but first I have to take care of a few details...

Other details...
Like making a replacement ball return panel.
It a tray on which the balls drop on to allow them to roll down to the ball trough on at the start of a new game.

I don't know what happened to the panel that was in my Show Time but it looks almost like it was kicked in or something. Anyway it was no good, the balls would stay stuck on the dent.

20171121_171104.jpg

I tried replacing it with a later tray from a magic screen game, but those panels are an inch and a bit shorter than the one used in Show Time. No good.

So I had to make a replacement, here a few pics documenting the process.

Other details...
Like cleaning the switches on the shutter motor.
I take out each switch stack, one at a time. I use a mini brass bristle brush and finish off the points with a flexstone.
Then I re-install the switch stack and actuate the ball shutter cam by hand the make sure the switches are gapped properly.

20180101_112040.jpg

With a switch stack in my hand

I swap out a few more worn out parts
Like this part off one of the magnet assemblies on the reflex unit.

worn out reflex unit part.jpg

That notch isn't supposed to be there

The the reflex unit wheel ate right through the pawl! Talk about variation in metal hardness
:FP:

Fortunately, I have spare used parts on hand.
Nowadays, looking for replacement bingo parts means looking in junk machines and plastic totes full of parts from parted out games but back in 1959...
You just had to fill an order form

Here are pages out the Wico 1959 parts catalog: The Bally section is almost all bingo parts

1959 wico 20 21.jpg

1959 wico 22 23.jpg

1959 wico 24 25.jpg

1959 wico 26 27.jpg

Those were the days
Wico parts catalogs from the 60's and 70's had bingo machine parts too

Until they were outlawed, bingo machines were good money makers.
Just the fact that parts distributors carried bingo machine parts well into the 80's says a lot. I have a 1988 Banco parts catalogue that had the bingo machine essentials.

Amazing detailed work as usual J.F.

You da man for this kind of work and also for digging up technical details in books and elsewhere to get it as right as possible. This (like pinball) was a business way before it was a hobby and most collectors forget that and often spew bullshit on the web about what they think they know and what they think they understand as some kind of truth. Sometimes it gets scary when they act on bits of info instead of getting as close as they can to understanding before taking the tools to the machines. But not you, you have a sense of history and respect for what came before and use it as a starting point, which is the right way to understand something from the past. Getting the context around something that is long gone the closest you can to what it was is the best starting point for exploring an object or situation from the past and again, increasing the chances at understanding it with the right mindset. You question and act on the possible answers with caution and I think that is the best approach. The fact that you do this with these electro-mechanical computers is something I have a lot of admiration for and could never find the patience and focus for in my present context. I live and work in the business side of this industry and it has for some reason become less colourful to me in 2017.

This is a wonderful mid entry bingo for those who want to get hooked in (pun intended for those who have looked into the past), my favorite years for bingos are really "53 to '58 or so. They all got something interesting, but Showtime and Key West were the most fun bingos I personally ever sat down to with a roll of nickels and a few beers.

Thanks for extending the bingo machine culture into a later era for which the actual contextual info is not always so easy to dig up due to that thief time.

Thank You Robert for the encouraging words and you support. Thanks for taking the time to write it here. I appreciate it. I owe you a beer and a hug. Cheers!

So far so good. No issues or complaints. It's a fun and addictive game, If you manage to get the A, B, C, D and E moving numbers and the "Press buttons AFTER shooting 5th ball" feature, you can really rack up the credits. Get multiple winning combinations on different colored lines by moving the numbers around.

Thanks Scott, Rob (Xylog) and Stéphane. Glad you guys followed this little bingo repair journey.

So… How to play Bally’s Show Time bingo machine

It’…

Let’s start at the very beginning:
A bingo machine is a type of gambling machine that was popular in the 50’s all the way to the 70’s.
Bingo machines are the games that gave [flipper] pinball a bad name.

20180102_202350.jpg

Full Backglass

20180102_201528.jpg

Playfield (Yes, I have the wrong SI cards)

The object of a bingo game is to light, by landing 5 or more balls in numbered pockets, a continuous sequence of 3, 4 or 5 numbers on one of the predetermined lines on the card to win credits. Won credits are added to the credit meter. Balls that make it all the way down the playfield and drain are returned to the shooter lane to shoot again until all 5 balls have landed in a numbered pocket.

20180102_201513.jpg

Ball return

Back in the day if you won enough credits, usually 200 or more, you could have your credits paid out by the manager of the fine establish in which you were playing. Some games were 5, 10 or 25 cents per credit. That's the dodgy part of it that made the bingo games illegal. And the fact that they raked in a ton of money that the government couldn't get their hands on.

20180102_200709.jpg

Credit display

To reset the credits back to zero, turning Off the game and back On again would start a credit reset sequence. The credits rapidly roll back to zero one at a time.

What makes it a gambling machine is that before shooting your first ball, you can put in an unlimited number of coins (one at a time) for the chance of activating (winning) extra features that "improve" your chances of winning or getting better odds.

20180102_201713.jpg

Front of the machine

By odds I mean how many credits the machine will award you if you do get a 3, 4 of 5 in line. Show Time has 8 odds steps ranging from 75 credits for a 5 in line to 600 credits for the same 5 in line.

20180102_201402.jpg

1st and 2nd odd steps

Example: The first odds step

75 credits for a 5 in line
16 credits for a 4 in line
4 credits for a 3 in line

Show Time also has coloured lines. Notice how the lines on the card are either Red, Yellow or Green. These go with the three coloured sets of odds.

Next post, I will go through the features.

Cool.

Have to admit, these bingos seem complicated to play. But I haven't had the opportunity to try one!

If not too much trouble, please post gameplay videos.

I like that a feature you can enable is hitting the ballyhole (16) for your first extra ball.

Will be curious to know the rules the upper right "PRess buttons before/after", like are those activated ONLY by the rollovers (which is a feature that needs to be lit) or can you just keep using credits and eventually be awarded those features that would normally have been activated by the rollovers being qualified?

Features of Bally Show Time:

Magic Squares and Magic Line feature

20180102_201429.jpg

Magic Square and line Feature

This is THE main feature of show time. 20 out of 25 numbers can be moved if the feature is lit. It’s a progressive feature. Meaning that you get the A, B, C, D and E feature bit by bit. Notice the 4 teaser arrows before the “A”. Once you’re passed the 4 teaser arrows, you get the A and B magic squares, then with enough luck and nickels you can work your way up to “E” magic line.

To move the numbers, you press corresponding A, B, C, D and E buttons on the foot rail.

Press buttons Before 4th ball / Before 5th Ball / After 5th ball, Red and Yellow rollovers:

Press buttons

This feature goes with the moving numbers feature. It determines how late in the game you have the ability to move the numbers around.

It’s another progressive feature. Notice the column of arrows on the left of the “press buttons” panels.

Before 4th ball:
You can move the numbers until 4th ball enters play

Yellow Rollover:
Lites the yellow star on the bottom left of the backless and the rollover on the playfield
If you roll over the left rollover you get the “Before 5th Ball” award feature

Red Rollover:

If you roll over it you get the “After 5th Ball” award feature

Before 5th Ball:
You can move the numbers until 5th ball enters play.

After 5th ball:
You can move the numbers until a 6th ball (first extra ball if awarded) enters play.

Good question… If you pump in enough coins, with a bit of luck, you can get the Press Buttons after 4th ball or After 5th ball. The feature isn’t exclusively accessible via the rollovers. It can be awarded outright.

When you first get the moving numbers feature, you get by default the press buttons before 4th ball panel, unless you already won "upgrades" to the "Press buttons" feature.

The “Press buttons now panel” flashes to remind you to move your numbers before the feature is disabled.

Corner scoring: Awarded on a random basis. When the feature is lit hitting (lighting) all 4 corners of the card scores like a 5 in line with the green odds. So whatever odd step the green is at, it will pay like a 5 in line.

Corner Scoring and Ballyhole

Ballyhole: Awarded on a random basis. When this feature is lit, landing a ball in the #16 hole will award you the first extra ball automatically.

Bingos aren’t complicated to play, you just have to know the terminology. Looking at the features on backglass, you can decode what you have to do.

A video? No chance. There’s already a bunch of bingo videos on the youtube anyway.

Bingos at Pincon 2018? A big maybe leaning towards No. Really depends on how the event is set up. I’m not babysitting bingos all weekend long like last time. Bringing 4 bingos and a pin via minivans was a huge PITA, fortunately I had some help.

Features continued:

Extra balls:

After Shooting all 5 balls you can bet for extra balls (up to 3 extra balls). After pressing the yellow button, each coin dropped starts a spin cycle for the chance of progressively lighting "First" then "extra" then "ball" after which you get an extra ball. A spin cycle can advance by NO steps, one step or multiple steps. You can repeat this process until you are awarded all 3 extra balls.

20180102_202052.jpg

20180102_201808.jpg

20180102_201754.jpg

To recapitulate gameplay:

Coin the game until you win a satisfactory number of extra features and good odds.
Shoot your 5 balls
Play for extra balls in the hope or winning.
Win credits for 3, 4 or 5 in line.

However, this is a gambling machine and the devious purpose of a gambling machine is to give the player the impression that the chances of winning are way better than what they actually are. The same applies to bingo machines by way of proportioning.

Proportioning?

Simply put, the machine gets more tight or more loose depending on odds, features, and number of credits won, it's not perfectly random.

The probability of features being awarded depends on what the odds are at. The better the odds are, the tighter the machine is for features.
The probability of odds improving depends on what features are won. The better the features are, the tighter the machine is for odds.
The probability of extra balls being awarded depends on where the odds are at and features awarded. The higher the odds and / or features are, the less extra ball will be awarded.
The odds, features and extra balls depend the number of credits previously won. The more you win the tighter the machine gets. The more credits you play without winning, the looser the machine gets.

On top of that Show Time has operator adjustment jacks to make the game generally tighter or looser for extra balls and corners feature.

The exceptionally astute reader will notice that I purloined a lot of text from my Surf Club writeup. Apologies. Gotta save time and there's not that many ways to write about bingo features.

The best feature combination you can land is the A, B, C, D and E feature with the "Press buttons after 5th ball" feature.
Then it's a credit galore. You can move the same numbers around to get winning combinations on different colored lines. The same numbers can score winning combinations in multiple colors. See below.

Notice lit numbers 9, 23 and 24. No winning combinations. But I have the A, B and C magic square feature lit.

20180102_200509.jpg

So I move number 9 around using the "A" button, and bingo! I collect a 3 in line in the Red

20180102_200521.jpg

Then I move 9 around to the yellow line...

20180102_200537.jpg

Then I move numbers 23 and 24 to the yellow line and Bingo again! I get a 3 in line in the yellow

20180102_200601.jpg

In the end, numbers 9, 23 and 25 won me 48 credits!

20180102_200709.jpg

Not too shabby :-P

Here's another example for the magic of Magic Squares

Oh Cool! A 3 in line in the red

1297A.jpg

Oh wait. I can move numbers 2 and 7 in the C square. 4 in line in the red.

1297B.jpg

Then I move the numbers around and the same 4 numbers gave me a 4 in line in the yellow.

1297C.jpg

Those 4 numbers gave me 74 credits on the meter.

1297D.jpg

I took the pictures before shooting the 5th ball. I don't remember where it landed, but it was a crap number. Thus not pictured.

I would still love a bingo machine at home, but I admit that they are a bit beyond my skillset right now. I might buy a nice working one and enjoy it, but they are hard to find!

Now playing in Sparky's Power Station: Jungle Lord, Sorcerer, Flash, Grand Lizard, Time Fantasy, Freefall, Big Game, BSD, Genesis, Totem, X-Files, Bumper, Marathon, Queen of Hearts, Lady Luck (Recel), Slapshot retheme pin, Zombie Walk retheme pin, Wizard of Wor, Major Havok mame, Mametendo redtent, Pintendo virtual pinball, and lots of others in restoration.
